The Music Man (1962 film)

Welcome to my blog! My name is Kathy Parker and I’m a life long lover of all things books. A librarian for more than 30 years, I’m looking to discuss books with others. Oh yes, I’m a Cubs fan, too!

Wondering why my blog is named Marianslibrary?  Ever since I first saw the movie, The Music Man, when it premiered in the theaters in 1962, it left a lasting impression on a certain 7 year-old little girl!  I fell in love with the music, Professor Harold Hill, and a certain fictional librarian, Marian Peru.  I decided since I loved to read and at the encouragement from my very own English teacher – my mother – I decided to pursue the prospect of becoming a librarian when I grew up!

Kathy, are you a librarian in the Chicago area? I’m looking to find a location to do an event. Can we chat?

  5. Just had lunch with you daughter, having heard her speak this morning at Free State Social. She’s a doll and you and your blog are swell. I’m a librarian at Lawrence Public Library, working on using social media for Reader’s Advisory — will be following you!

  6. Marian,

Congrats on your nice book blog. How does a writer contact you about possibly reviewing his/her book?
    Best!

  7. This is way too cute, Mom! Reading your blog makes me smile.

  8. Hi Kathy!

I tracked you here from the Unquiet Library’s site. So impressed and inspired by what you are doing!!! I’m wondering if you would give permission for our school to use what you put together for a Kindle permission form, as I’m starting a pilot in our library soon.

    All my best,
    Belle

    • Hi Belle,

Yes, please feel free to use the Kindle permission form for your library. Tweak it to suit your needs if necessary. Good luck with your Kindle endeavor! If I can be of any other help, please drop me a line.

      Thank you!
      Kathleen

  9. LaVonne Walter

    Hello Marian,
I found your blog through The Unquiet Library. The Rotary Club of Fort Worth has given my library 25 Kindles and 75 to the school. This is a 3 year project in which we will receive 25 Kindles every year – total of 75. My district is having trouble figuring out how to handle the email accounts, but I have the need for forms and documentation instruments. Unquiet indicates you have given permission to adapt some of your forms. May I do that also and give you credit? Thank you, LaVonne

    • Good Afternoon LaVonne!
Congratulations on acquiring Kindles for your library! I love hearing this fabulous news. Yes, you surely may use the forms. I enjoy helping others with their programs. If you would ever need any other assistance, please feel free to contact me.
      Best to you,
      Kathleen

      • Lynette Buck

        Kathleen,
I too am in need of the forms. I’m fairly new to the library scene, and especially inept with digital resources. Your documents would be a tremendous help for me. May I also use them, giving you credit?

      • Hi Lynette,
Yes, please feel to use the forms. Glad I can help you out!
        Best,
        Kathleen

    Hi Kathy,
I located your site after linking to The Unquiet Library. Our elementary media center has just received 30 iPads and 30 Kindles. May I tweak your forms and use them with our students as we get ready to roll out this pilot program? We would give you credit for the intellectual property. Thanks, Andrea Baker

    • Morning Andrea,
Congratulations on acquiring the Kindles and the iPads for your media center! Yes, you surely may tweak the form to fit your needs.
I would be interested in finding out how you’re planning on using the iPads. Thanks for sharing your information!
      Best,
      Kathleen

Hey Kath, I heard you were involved in my Christmas Kindle. Thanks!
Just about finished with “Colonel Roosevelt”. Very good, I read the 1st book, “Rise of Theodore Roosevelt” 15 years ago and thought it was as good a biography as I’ve read. Read parts of the 2nd volume and didn’t like as much. Say hi to everyone for me!

    • Hi John!!!
Thanks for stopping by my blog site to drop me an email! What a nice “brother” you are! Glad you are loving your Kindle! Yes, I had a hand in it. 🙂
Thanks for sharing what you just finished reading. I think you might enjoy some of the non-fiction books I selected for my Winter Reads List.
Best to you & tell the family hello!
      Kathy

      • John Baker

Right now I have 2 more books on kindle I need to read, next up “The Dragon With The Girly Tatoo” or something like that. Apparently I missed the mem0 but it seems that this required reading for anyone over 12. Who new?

      • Most definitely John!!
Steve and I loved the trilogy – sad though the author has since died & there will be no more books about Lizabeth! Let me know what you think of them.
        Happy Reading!
        Kathy

Hello from Virginia. Our high school library has obtained four Kindles and it would be wonderful if you would allow us to adapt your form. It is the best one out there to suit everyone’s needs! We would definitely give you credit as well. Thanks so much for forging the road for all of us!

  13. Hi! Your form was passed along to me from Buffy Hamilton here in GA, and I noticed she had credited you at the bottom. I would like to modify and use that Kindle form as well. Is that OK? I can send you a copy of the modified one if you like. Please advise; thanks!

  14. Hi Kathy,
Our library recently acquired three Kindles and I would love to adapt your permissions letter and attribute the original to you? Love your blog!

  15. Marian-
Like so many of the previous posts, I wish to adapt your Kindle permissions form as found on The Unquiet Librarian site. Our 7-12 library hopes to acquire 6 Kindles in the next few weeks, and I am a Kindle “newbie”.

    • Hi Mary Alice! Love the name. I have a very dear book club friend with the same name. 🙂
Yes, you are more than welcome to use and adapt our Kindle permission form as you start your Kindle program. If you have any questions along the way, please feel free to email me. Also, if you haven’t been to: http://www.edukindle.ning.com – it’s an EXCELLENT site for Kindle information.
      Best,
      Kathy

  16. Kit Vaughan

In reading your wonderful blog, it looks like I’m not the first to ask permission to adapt your Kindle forms (and give you credit) for our school libraries. We’d greatly appreciate it.

I loved reading how your blog got its name. Many, MANY years ago, my sister had a bit part in the musical at the local high school, and I was forced to attend her performance. I was hooked on Music Man and Marion from then on.

    Cheers!

    • Good afternoon Kit!
Thank you for the very nice compliment concerning my blog! I’ve enjoyed writing for it over the past year. I’m in the process of contributing part of a chapter to a professional book so I’ve been a bit lax with my blog. I do have my Spring Reads to post later next week as well as my 10 Parker’s Picks for April and May.
Yes, please use my Kindle form for your school library.
I loved your story about your sister and The Music Man!!

      Best to you!
      Kathy

  17. Susan

My school district has just recently begun to purchase Nooks & iPads to use for ebooks. We came across an AUP that you developed, and we wanted to ask your permission to use and modify it for our schools?
    Thank you!
    Susan P.

    • Good afternoon Susan,

I’d love to help out a fellow Illinois school! 🙂 Yes, please feel free to use it for your Nooks and iPads & modify it to suit your needs.
      Best,
      Kathy

      • Kathy,
I have also discovered your Nook permission form and think is is great! I would like to ask your permission to modify it to reflect our school’s information and costs and use it within our school district. I am in a small town school in Wisconsin.

      • Morning Sue,
Yes, please feel free to modify the form to suit your school’s needs.
        Thanks!
        Kathy

  18. Ann

We would like your permission to use a greatly-adapted version of your form for our Kindles. May we? Thanks!

  19. Kathy, I would like to contact you to ask several questions about digital reading. What email I could use?
    Best Regards,
    Marco

  20. Lynette

    Hello Kathy,
I am also requesting the use of your forms. I’m a dither head, but would certainly appreciate NOT having to make up new forms. Thanking you in advance for your time, talents and permission.
    Lynette

  21. Lynette

Thank you, I did receive the permission email. I have passed along the information to our district media specialist for her perusal. Perhaps you will be getting another permission request. I’m certainly appreciative of the time it took you to create these documents and to work through all the “wriggles” Thank you so much for being a “sharer” and not a hoarder. I love the blog and look forward to the time when I can explore more fully all there is here.
    Have a lovely Thanksgiving.
    Kind regards,
    Lynette

    • Thanks so much for your kind words! As our school has now started to research the possibility of using iPads in the classrooms, we’ve been lucky enough to have some resource educators who have shared their information with us. Sometimes there is no sense “reinventing the wheel” so to speak.
Yes, stop by again to visit my blog! There’s a multitude of information, book lists, and book reviews.

      Best,
      Kathleen

  22. We would also like permission to use your forms with the Kindles in our media center. We are just starting to “put a toe” in the water when it comes to eBooks. Your forms would be a real help to us in getting started.
    Thanks! Cathy Keller

  29. Hi Kathy,

    Hi Kathy!

    • Lynn

      Kathy,
As you have done such a great job with this document about ebook permission slips, I’m wondering if you have anything in your authoritative file that addresses closing procedures for an assistant. It seem as though mine doesn’t feel the need to help in the library during the last couple of days, and is busy any where else in the school helping anyone do… whatever….I would appreciate any help you could give me.

      • Hi Lynn,
Thanks for the compliment! As far as your question goes, it has always been part of the assistants’ duties but not anything official as far as documentation that I can actually share. Sorry I couldn’t be of more help. Possibly can you make it part of the job description that you and your principal could work on together and approve? That would be my suggestion.
        Best,
        Kathy

      • Lynn

I spoke with my administrator and we decided to have a list of things that will be her responsibility at the beginning and the end of the school year. She is to have those items completed before leaving for summer, or taking on tasks from anyone else. I’m thinking this will do the trick. I appreciate your time in responding.

      • Glad to hear you discussed it with your administrator.
        Best to you!
        Kathy
